Gordon Russell

Sir Gordon Russell

A pioneer of furniture making and design.

Born in 1892, he believed that through good design, the skilled handcrafts of British cabinet making could marry with the great opportunities offered by modern machines and technology. His company went onto work at the forefront of European furniture making and in 1955 Gordon Russell was awarded a knighthood for his services to design. In 2008 the Gordon Russell Design Museum was established in the original Gordon Russell workshop in Broadway, Worcestershire. The museum provides a fascinating insight into the life and work of Sir Gordon Russell and his company. Visit the museum website on www.gordonrusselldesignmuseum.org

Gordon Russell Furniture at

In 2008 William Hands acquired the Gordon Russell brand to continue the Gordon Russell philosophy.

The brands shared a common set of values and history. Both companies started life creating pieces for the domestic market, before transitioning into the highest quality design and manufacture of workplace furniture.

A specialist team of craftsmen and designers at William Hands undertake commissions to make inspiring pieces of unique furniture for business, government and private individuals around the world. Our craftsmen employ traditional furniture making skills alongside advanced manufacturing technology and equipment, aided by computer generated design software to achieve outstanding quality products. For inspiration and to see examples of our workplace work, view the William Hands Case Studies on this website.

Gordon Russell Student Design Project

Inspiring a new generation

Since 2008 William Hands have used the Gordon Russell name to support, educate and inspire new creatives to develop and work in our industry.

Each year BA students at Rycotewood Furniture Centre, City of Oxford College participate in the Gordon Russell Project as part of their degree studies. The project is sponsored by William Hands working in partnership with the Furniture Makers Livery Company.

We build on the Gordon Russell philosophy to create a challenging brief for students to design and make furniture that expresses their individual style and has relevance to the modern market place.
